Sunraysia Motor Sport Club was formed on the 4th July 1973 and in 2008 celebrated it’s 35th Birthday. The club leased some land at Ash Avenue, Koorlong this land became known as “Mecca”.

In 1974 they became affiliated with the Confederation of Australian Motor Sport (CAMS). Sunraysia Motor Sport Club was the promoting club for the Sunset Enduro’s back in the 70s, having some famous names competing in a couple of these events Peter Brock and Larry Perkins.

In 1983 the club signed a lease with the Mildura Shire for “Block H” Koorlong this has been the clubs main track since.

In 1985the club looked into the possibility of an inter-club challenge this later become the Mallee Shield Inter-Club Challenge, this is an event ran between 5 Victorian clubs, Sea Lake Off Road Club (SLORC), Bendigo Car Club (BCC), Victorian Off Road Racing Association (VORRA), Geelong Off Road Buggy Association (GORBA) and Sunraysia Motor Sport Club (SMSC). The Mallee Shield is held over 8 rounds BCC, SLORC & SMSC run 2 rounds each, VORRA and GORBA hold one each.

In 1992 a discussion took place about running an event from Tapio Station to Pooncarrie and return, this event took place and was known as “The Coomealla 500” this was run in August of 1993. The event later became a round of the Victorian Off Road Championship. “The Sunraysia 500” also took place with continuos loops on private property at Pooncarrie, in the latter years the event was also held at Tapio Station and took on a dual status being a round of the Victorian Off Road Championship and a round of the Australian Off Road Championship.

In 2008 the event gained a major sponsor PWR Performance Products, the race was called the “PWR Sunraysia 500” and was held at Tapio Station with the support of the Barnfield Family, the committee decided to move the pit area from the rodeo grounds up on top of a hill to allow better viewing for spectators. For the 08 event the track was also changed to once again accommodate spectator viewing.

The sport in Sunraysia, like elsewhere from its humble beginnings has developed into a semi professional activity in a lot of instances. Clubs now abide by Risk Management and OH & S Policy’s, Teams now have decked out buses / trucks and custom built trailers.

Volunteers and Sponsors are the important part of the club as with any club and without these volunteers giving up their time or business’s sponsoring events it would be very difficult for any club to survive so for this we say a Big Thank You.

We look forward to seeing what 2009 brings.
